It’s official. Uber’s senior management team is not entirely men.

On Tuesday, the ride-hailing service held a news conference to assure people of a few things: Uber’s board of directors still supports the company’s oft-criticized chief executive, Travis Kalanick; the company is determined to find a strong executive to become a chief operating officer; and it is very serious about cleaning up what has often been described as a toxic culture.

The news conference’s participants — all women in senior roles — also offered a counternarrative to people who believe Uber’s “bro” culture has allowed harassment of women who work there to go unchallenged.

Arianna Huffington, the internet entrepreneur and an Uber board member, was joined on the call by Liane Hornsey, the recently hired head of human resources at the company, and Rachel Holt, the head of Uber’s ride-hailing business in the United States and Canada.

The image of Uber senior management as a men’s club is not entirely fair. Sally Yoo, for example, is the company’s general counsel. And few tech companies can claim significant gender diversity in the management ranks or their general work force.

But when former employees make damaging claims about unpunished harassment in the office, it is not surprising that the face offered by Uber to the public — at least for one day — is not Mr. Kalanick’s.
